Pundi gatti (red rice)

Pundi gatti or Red rice ball is an authentic coastal breakfast. It involves a lengthy process, but the taste makes all effort worthy!

Ingredients

  • Red rice – 2 glass
  • Coconut – 2 cups
  • Salt
  • Oil

Method

Wash the red rice well and soak overnight. Grind the rice with coconut and salt. The batter need not be of fine consistency.

Heat a thick bottomed kadai and add a little oil. Now add the batter and keep stirring. Simmer the heat and still until the batter thickens. Dont burn the batter, since this will effect the taste.

You will know the batter is ready with this tip – Wet your hands and take a little batter on wet hands. The batter should not stick to your hands. This is when the batter is ready to make balls.

Switch off flame and allow the mixture to cool down a little. When you can manage to make balls, keep the steamer ready and make balls. Press you finger in the middle of the ball to make a small hole.

Keep the balls in the steamer and steam it for 20 minutes.
